Tahan

I never knew that I could hike up to the peak of Gunung Tahan in just 2 days.

Here's a picture of the elevation profile of Gunung Tahan via Merapoh trail.

The usual trip goes like this:

Day 1: Sungai Relau to Kuala Juram in a jeep, and start hiking from Kuala Juram to Kem Kor, which is 13.5km long and 441m in elevation and spend a night there.

Day 2: Kem Kor - Bukit Botak which is 16km long and 1193m in elevation and spend the night there

Day 3: From Bukit Botak to Gunung Tahan (the peak) for 2.4km and 482m in elevation. Then trek down to Kem Kor (18.4km and 1675m change of altitude). Spend the night in Kem Kor

Day 4: Kem Kor - Kuala Juram, 13.5km.

Due to some miscommunication between the guides and the travel agents that we dealt with, we did not bring gas and cooking utensils as we were told that they would be provided. Only when we went to the camp, we were told that those were not prepared for us. So the guides offered to share their gas supply with us but that would only last for 3 days. Thus we would have to cut the hike down to 3 days.

Here's the new itinerary:

Day 1: Sungai Relau to Kuala Juram in a jeep, and start hiking from Kuala Juram to Kem Kor, which is 13.5km long and 441m in elevation and spend a night there.

Day 2: Kem Kor to Kubang which is 6km long and 656m of elevation and set up the tents and bring only necessary stuffs and go up to the peak, which is 12.5km and 781m in elevation and make it back to Kubang on the same day. It means hiking up and down a total distance of 31km in a day.

Day 3: From Kubang down to Kuala Juram, which spans 13.5km and 1097m change of elevation.

We accepted the challenge and made it to the top at last. I was on an extreme euphoric epiphany when I was on the top of the mountain. To be honest, it was really rewarding and I had not felt this kind of sense of achievement for such a long time.

The little white space on the left of my head is actually Kem Botak.

A group photo on the highest point of the mountain.

This would be a memory of a lifetime.
